NOT MUCH MONEY FROM PINK NFL MERCH GOES TO CANCER RESEARCH _ It's hard to miss all of the pink shoes, wristbands and (briefly) penalty flags that have filled NFL games for the past few weeks as part of the league's annual Breast Cancer Initiative. Each team also sells pink merchandise to support the cause, but how much of that money actually goes to breast cancer research? Not a lot, according to data obtained by ESPN. The league takes a cut from the wholesale price, and donates 90 percent of the royalties to the American Cancer Society.
... That might sound hefty, but consider that of the overall price, the retailer and manufacturer get most of the money — only a little over 11 percent of the total you spend goes to the American Cancer society. And because the ACS has its own operating costs, it only uses 71 percent of the money it receives for research and cancer programs. That means that for every $100 spent on a pink Broncos hat (or any other pink NFL merchandise), just a little over 8 bucks actually goes to cancer research.
