SCMPD Animal Control and numerous volunteer agencies are joining forces to find homes for the 71 dogs discovered Sunday afternoon living in filth.

SCMPD Animal Control took in the dogs, when they were already busting at the seams with 134, well over capacity. They called in Friends of Animal Control Team Savannah (F.A.C.T.S.) Diane Abolt, volunteer coordinator, who went to work calling friends nearby. Soon Marantha Farms from Ridgeland, SC, Brooks Bed and Biscuit from Bluffton, SC, Companion Animal Aid from Pooler, and Pets Are Worth Saving (PAWS) from Savannah and Effingham County were there to help.
Most of the dogs have gone to the rescue organizations where they will be seen by a veterinarian, inoculated, checked for heartworms, and spayed or neutered. Some of the dogs are still at Animal Control or in foster care and are available for adoption. All of the dogs are small breeds and in need of a loving home.
Fourteen of the dogs are in foster care and need adoption soon, according to Animal Control officers.
The large number of dogs in such a short period of time is a huge burden on non-profits. Anyone wishing make a monetary donation, volunteer or adopt a dog from one of the volunteer organizations is asked to contact Diane Abolt of FACTS at 912-484-4438.
The owner of the dogs, Daniel Golden, 43, is cooperating with police. Charges against him are pending.
Animal Control is located at 7211 Sally Mood Drive, and is open 7 days a week 1-5 p.m., and 1-6 p.m., on Thursdays. . The phone number is 912-351-6751.
