Brothers Wait Six Years to Claim $5 Million Lottery Prize
New York State lottery officials said yesterday (October 17th) that two brothers from the upstate town of Cicero had waited six years to claim a $5 million lottery prize for a scratch-off ticket, coming forward just 11 days before the ticket would have expired. The lottery officials said 34-year-old Andy Ashkar bought the ticket at his parents' convenience store in 2006, and decided to share the winnings with his older brother Nayel, who's now 36. Nayel told the lottery agency that he waited so long to claim the prize because he was concerned it would negatively influence his life if he didn't plan properly before being introduced as the winner. Similarly, Andy said he didn't want the money to influence his engagement and subsequent marriage.
